Confirmation is a very powerful grace of the Holy Spirit who ignites the soul more fervently in the divine gifts in order that you may live out the Catholic faith with increased strength and conviction. The Apostles on the Day of Pentecost received an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and from this day forward they were filled with great courage and zeal to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Our Bishop will bestow on you the Sacrament of Confirmation. It has been a long-standing tradition in the church to take a saint’s name as you are presented to the Bishop for this sacrament.
Names are important in the Judeo-Christian Tradition since they are believed to form the persons who bear them. God, throughout the Bible, changes a person’s name to signify his or her divine mission. For instance, Abram’s name was changed to Abraham which means “Father of many nations.” Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter which means “a rock” - “and on this rock I will build my church.” Matthew 16-18.
A transformation within your soul will soon take place and your full mission as a Catholic Christian will begin. It is right that you consider and pray about choosing a name of a saint that is a person you admire and want to emulate as well as someone who can pray for you from heaven.
Below are websites you can visit to help you get started on choosing a saint’s name. You may also choose your own baptismal name (as long as it is a saint’s name). Once you have decided upon your Confirmation name, please write one or two paragraphs by clicking on the link below. Include the Saint’s name, biography of, and reason you have chosen this saint. Submissions are due by mid-February.
